More David Petrakis magic. I love that he is willing to stand up for what he knows is right. I hope his fight gives Melinda some strength.
And onto Wombats. Hilarious that they win the mascot vote. It’s pretty obvious that there are identity struggles all over this book.
Finally Winter break. I was glad to see Melinda getting into the spirit of Christmas. Even though I agree with her, that “There is something about Christmas that requires a rug rat. Little kids make Christmas fun” there is still something magical about that time of year, no matter your age. This is the closest we see Melinda come to asking for help and sharing her trauma with her parents. It gives me some hope that she will find her way.
Foul is an interesting chapter. I’d love to know what people think when reading it. Did you think this would be a changing point for Melinda? I feel like it could have been, but nothing ever really materializes with Melinda’s basketball skills.
I really admire that Melinda will not give up on her art project. This says so much about her as a person. And then with one step forward, two steps back, there is her incident when dissecting the frog. The standout sentence for me in this segment? “I just want to sleep. The whole point of not talking about it, of silencing the memory, is to make it go away. It won’t.”
